Problem running Doom 3 with ATI AIW 9800 Pro

When I run Doom 3 it crashes as soon as it loads first level. I installed ATI Cat 4.9 update and it works, but now my TV tuner software doesn't.

Anyone running Doom 3 with ATI AIW 9800 Pro?

System specs: Win XP SP1, P4 2.66 gig, 1 gig ram, Mobo Asus P4P3, DirectX 9.0b.

To those of you with AIW cards:

You can install the WDM drivers with this new set of Beta's by doing the following:

1. Copy the WDM folder from a previous driver set to the 4.9 directory and the WDM drivers will be installed, but they will still not be detected. You will need to run through the following steps to install them.

2. During the reboot when the "Unknown" devices pop up, select the "Install from a list or specific location" option. Click Next.

3. Select "Don't search. I will choose the driver to install." option. Click Next.

4. From the list of device types, select "Sound Video and Game Controllers". Click Next.

5. Select the ATI category. Install the devices in the following order:

ATI WDM Rage Theater Audio
ATI WDM Rage Theater Video
ATI WDM Specialized MVD Codec
ATI WDM Specialized PCD Codec
ATI WDM TV Audio Crossbar
ATI WDM TV Tuner

6. Always choose to install the device even though Windows will tell you it's not recommended.

7. Follow the prompts to complete the driver install. No Reboot is necessary.

8. You will need to repeat steps 1-7 for each device.

I'm a little confused about step 1 in your procedure. Right now my system is workin with old driver set (WDM 6.14.10.6201). I'm not sure where to find old and new drivers? In the process of trying to get this to work, I did try to manually add drivers from device manager for "unknown" devices, but it didnt work.

You should have an ATI folder (ex: C:\ATI) and then a "support" folder which contains your decompressed ATI driver files. Each driver set decompresses into this folder, nearly all 🙂 have a WDM folder containing the WDM files, this is the WDM folder that is referenced in that thread.

I only have a "mmc-9-1-0-0 & remote-wonder-2-3-0-1-english" directories under c:\ati\support.

At this point I didnt try to re-install 4.9 drivers. I don't know if that matters why I dont see the WDM drivers.

How about just in the ATI folder...do you see any unpacked driver folders? If you have none, unzip an ATI driver pack (Cat 4.7 for instance) into a folder and find the WDM folder.

Ok I started to uncompress the Cat 4.7 software and see the directory c:\ati\support\wxp-w2k-catalyst-8-03-040610a-016126c with wdm\wdm_xp directory.

I restored my drivers from original ATI CD, maybe that's why there were none under c:\ati.

How should I now proceed?

I would say you drag and drop that WDM folder into the beta driver folder and install the driver and then after you reboot, follow the rest of the steps to manually install the WDM drivers. Are you sure you don't want to just go back to the 4.7 cats and wait for the official drivers?

I guess I should wait for offical drivers (with WDM included). I wish they would made it clear that Cat 4.9 would cause problems with AIW cards.

If you were comfortable with manually installing drivers, its not that big a deal. You just put the WDM folder into this beta driver pack and install like normal. after you reboot, manually install the WDM drivers and it should be OK.

I understanding that this was a beta release ( I still feel that they should of highlighted issue for AIW users).

I think my issue is that I'm still running old Cat version (3.2) from ATI cd. I have been just updating MMC software (from 8.5 to 9.1) and RW (1.5 to 2.3) software while leaving older drivers installed.

Maybe just try to download the WDM drivers from Cat 4.7 if you don't have the WDM folder?

I downloaded the WDM drivers for Cat 4.7. I uncompressed them and now have the WDM folder. Should I now follow your procedure from step 1 (using Cat 4.7 WDM drivers) with Cat 4.9 install.

Its not going to hurt to just try and install the WDM pack you just downloaded. After you reboot, you may have to point to the wdm folder containing the drivers you need (I think there is XP and 9x WDM folders)

When I get a chance I'll give it a try. My only concern is that I think I might of tried this already. I tried a number of different drivers but its like a blurr now.
