Problem Returns: View and Reply Windows cannot be resized?

1st off, I want to state that I?m not sure where this topic belongs. It is a question about the Internet Explorer Browser and the way it is working with the AnandTech Forum Messages (PMs).

Since Internet Explorer is so much of the WindowsXP OS, I was thinking about posting this in the OPERATING SYSTEMS FORUM. But since it is a situation that only seems to appear when I use the AnandTech Private Message function I felt I?d try FORUM ISSUES first.

Issue: I don?t know when this started but whenever I read or write a PM, I am now looking at a window that does not allow me to change its size. The MAXIMIZE button is grayed out and not available. I cannot even grab the edges of the window to expand or contract its size. This happens in both the VIEW and REPLY modes.

It is very disconcerting because I have some messages that do not WORD WRAP and I have to SCROLL to the right to see all of the content. The SEND PRIVATE MESSAGE button is so low that I have to SCROLL to see it fully.

I have set my AnandTech PROFILE / PERSONAL OPTIONS to the ?forums default?.

I have reset the Internet Explorer TOOLS / OPTIONS / ADVANCED to DEFAULT.

These steps have not cleared up the situation.

Is anyone else experiencing this? Is there a FIX?

Thanks for reading. :)

it does it to me too but thats jsut the way the windows are programmed...the javascipt popup specifically states no resize :/ I hate this too and wish people would be nice enough not to program this way...why make it one set size when screeens are such a variety of sizes/resolutions these days ...grrrrrrrr

The reply window does expand I've tried it the scroll bars appear. The view does not, but how is that an issue since all of the buttons are up top and the text area where the message is is scrollable?

Thanks

here's a screenshot of what my pm windows looks like

:camera:

note that there is a scroll bar on the right side, however it is disabled.
also note that the maximize button is disabled as well...thus I can't resize it.

I don't really care about the matter though, it looks fine to me...no need to change it. Just stating that the reply pm window is not resizable for me. (Using IE 6 with WinXP)

I have set my display settings to 1024 by 768 and the problem has disappeared.

I usually use 1152 by 864 to 1280 by 960.

Anyone else experience this?

Edit: I just changed my settings to 1280 by 960 and the problem I was experiencing has disappeared.

I bet using the forum defaults had something to do with the improvement that didn't take effect until I rebooted (or at least logged off and returned).

So at this point, I withdraw my original comment. :p :)

Wierd, can't replicate it so far here but its on the radar. I think part of your problem is the JUMBO fonts you have, not much we can do about that.

ah...so that's where the problem is that you are having. wierd.

I never use that feature anyway...I just click the name of the person pming me to get the full history of the convo along with the most recent.

as for replicating it...maybe Zuni could try logging on as you and reading that specific pm?

I just ckecked to see if I have this problem, and by chance I clicked on a PM from moonshinemadness, the same person as your PM.

I too am having this problem, but only with PMs from moonshinemadness. I think that the lenght of his name is making the left hand column too big, so it pushes the message off to the side.

EDIT: this happens with Mozilla, Opera and IE

Yomicron you've nailed it.

I did some test by saving some PMs and editing the source. If a username is wider than the normal area where the name goes, the white PM Text Box is shifted over to make room for the name and after a certain point it extends over the window boundary and a portion can no longer be seen.

Not a bad idea! Alas it seems that the PM windows are now re-sizable again. :)
