OK, first of all, the Barton in my sig died. I'm back using my XP2200, which I slightly oc, 11x166.

I picked up a used mobile Barton 2600 but haven't put it in yet.

I also picked up (new) 2x512 Corsair value ram DDR400, PC3200. This is all so I can go to 200 fsb.

Today, I popped in the new ram. Everything fired up fine (I wasn't sure if it would)

As I was checking out things with cpu-z, my Asus probe started beeping about every minute. You can see from the picture that the fans would drop out. After a while things straightened out and every thing was fine. Then it happened again and I realized it happened when I turned on cpu-z.

Whats up with that? Does cpu-z load down the system? Is this real? Has anyone else run in to this? This never happened til today when I changed out the ram.

Also, in cpu-z, on the SPD tab (whats that stand for anyway?) it show the 2 stick of mem in slots 1 and 2. I put them in 1 and 3. It does say dual channel in the Memory tab.

To djohn3853,

Which version of cpu-z?----there is a version 138 and the recent 139.---but I just updated to 139 and had shutdown problems with win xP pro. I never had these problems before and its sure premature to blame the 139 upgrade---but now I wonder.---I will also check to see if fan speeds change when I open CPU-z.

But I note on my system which which use a 64 bit sempron 3000+, cpu-z can be confusing due to cool and quiet software---the chip may be capable of running at 1.8 gig hrz, but default down to using a multiplier of 5 instead of 9 when the system is not under load.---with ram reading equally suspect.---load the system with cpu-z open and the multiplier pops up to 9. But I may be to change that in the bios by switching the multiplier off auto.

I had the problem with both 1.38 and 1.39. Someone had suggested that 1.38 was glitchy and I should get 1.39. I have the same problem with it.

I don't think the fans are actually dropping out like Asusprobe shows. I think there is just some conflict with cpu-z and asusprobe accessing the sensors at the same time.

Today I had an unplanned day off. Got up and had no heat. I live in RI and the temp this AM was 0. The temp inside my house was 50. Anyway the repairman came and replaced the water feeder and I'm all set now. They were gone by 11:15 and since I live an hour from my job, I wasn't gonna go in for half a day.

Anyway, I took the opportunity to pop in the 2600 mobile Barton I picked up recently. I set everything in Bios to user defined. As a first try I set the fsb to 190 and the multi to 11. I put the mem timings at 2.5-3-3-8. They had been at 2.5-3-3-7. Somehow it kinda defaulted to the 2.5-3-3-8 so I just went with it. One question though, I knew I wasn't gonna go straight to 200fsb (because I've read its difficult to achieve with my mobo) so I had expected to set the mem timing to 'sync'. Thing was though, there wasn't a choice called 'sync'. The choices they gave didn't seem obvious to me so I just set it at 100%. However, cpu-z and Sandra and memtest all report the mem speed as 190 (same as cpu). I had expected to see it reported as 200 making me 'out of sync'

Anyway, it fired right up and is running at 13C for mobo and 36C for cpu. I played about an hours worth of Far Cry and the temps went up about 5C.

I then ran memtest86 and I got 5 passes with no errors. So, I'm feeling pretty good right now because I had been leary of trying all this.
