Problem, possibly with my NFORCE 8RDA+

I just built my computer a few days ago. I have a Epox Nforce 2 8RDA+, 2500+, corsair 2700 512, Western Digital 80gig harddrive, Lite ON CDRW, DVD Drive, and a temporary Geforce2 GTS. (no floppy).

When i boot up, it takes AT LEAST 1 minute for the computer to detect my IDE drives... HD and cdrom's, then it proceeds to sit for another minute before loading. I installed Win98se, and then it prompted me to reboot before finalizing installation - but now it won't boot windows. The files are all there, I can look at them in MS-dos, but windows doesn't boot. regardless of whether or not I ask for it to boot with or without cd support. Also, the computer works fine - I loaded up Knoppix 3.1 off CD and it worked like a charm.

So my 2 problems are:

1) EXCEEDINGLY SLOW bootup at initial powerup

2) Windows98se won't load

Sounds like maybe you have your jumpers set incorrectly. Since it looks like you only have one hard drive, did you remove the jumper? If your WD is the only drive on the IDE channel, remove the jumper. It's set so that if it's the only drive, you're not supposed to have the jumper on... WD drives are picky that way.

Nope, the driver is set on master. Let me go try what you suggested.

- LoL, that did it. Thanks.

Now I must rectify my windows situation. Any Ideas? Can I do anything through Knoppix 3.1 (Linux on CD)?

Heh, glad to see everythings working now.

Oh yeah.. when you install the nforce drivers, don't bother installing the IDE drivers... they seem to cause too many problems

No, install the IDE drivers, but reply no when it asks if you want to install the "Performance SW" drivers. There are two IDE drivers in the 2.03 UDP, the WHQL ones work fine, the Performance ones do do, but screw with optical drives like CDRW's. 🙂

Edit:

The WD thing is a known issue with their drives...more a result of the WD drive than the chipset or board. If you are running a IDE WD as a master, with no slave, you need to just remove the jumper completely from the back of the drive. 🙂
