Problem overclocking C2D E4300 on P5N-E SLI

By now I'd say my problem is quite impossible to be solved. Well... so far any one could help me.

Let me explain what's happening.

I friend of mine had got the same mainboard, the same PSU and literally the same CPU (I bought my E4300 from him). His system was rock-solid @ 3.2GHz 1.35v. I'm using Scythe Ninja and he was using generic cooling. However, I only get stability when using 1.39v VCore. Well, I got a bit bored, but that's not thaaaat weird unnacceptable result, too.

What is really driving me crazy is: my computer just won't boot with 8x multiplier, ANY WAY. Even with highest chipset voltage. I've tried bios 0608 and 0401 and they gave me the same results. Take a look: FSB 1423, mult 9x, 3.2GHz 100% rock solid. With the same VCore, FSB 1600, mult 8x, 3.2GHz won't even boot. And this is perfectly stable on my friend's system.

Just for information, my board is Pencil Modded and VCore Drop under full load is 0.00v (absolutelly nothing).

P5N-E SLI last bios (0608)
Samsung 2×1GB DDR2-800 k4t51083qe-gce7 CAS 5-5-5 2T Tras 31 Clocks, Trc 23 Clocks
XFX 8600GT XXX
Audigy ES
WD SATA2 320GB
PSU 420w real 24-pin Seventeam ST-420BKV.

don't worry about it. You want to use the highest multiplier you can to minimize stress upon the rest of the system anyway. If you can get 3.2 with a 9x and 3.2 with an 8x you're still better off using the 9x. That's the big selling point of the extreme chips, you don't have to crank the fsb to 2000 to get a decent oc on them.

I really am not very interested about using 8x multiplier, but the question is: why, here, the computer won't even boot and my friend can get it stable?
I find it too much difference for the same system.

keys, apoppin, marcvenice, and several others had a long discussion about this issue a few days ago. THIS is why you only benchmark with one system. You can have identical systems that were built the same day using components that are one number off in the SN and still see a major difference in the actual systems when they're compared side by side. Your friend's mobo is a better overclocker than yours. Don't lose any sleep over it. Now, on the other hand, if you bought an e6750 that would only oc to 3.5 when you could have gotten a g0 quad that would do 3.3, you would be entirely justified in slapping yourself silly.

I have 2 E4300s that wont do over 350fsb. (even x6)

350x9 is orthos stable for 24 hours.
375x6 is about 5 mins stable...

E6600s in the same 2 rigs will both break 470fsb.

Im not sure on your multiplier issue, but it doesnt appear to be specific to your board either. There are a lot of reports out there of goofy stability issues on certain multipliers.

Blergh... how sad.
Anyway I'm pretty sure the problem is not my CPU, 'cause the same in my friend's system works properly with 8x multiplier.
But ok, I've understood his board overclocks better than mine.

Anyway, I find ridiculous my board doesn't work with 8x multiplier EVEN WITH VERY LOW FSB, it's like the board forces me to use 9x multiplier. Seems like the board commands, not me.

Just two more questions:

1. The mem should be at black or yellow slots?

2. Why the recommendation of using 2T (CPC off) instead of 1T (CPC on)?

i use the black slots myself no problem -- the only way you'd be able to use the yellow is with the fan not blowing to the back of your case

the main difference is that T1 and T2 have major difference with stability for ram performance on this chipset -- check out -- http://forums.anandtech.com/me...id=29&threadid=1972653

I had some issues with my e4300 on this board -- just wouldn't do over 3.0ghz for me but it was fine for someone on a 965 chipset at 3.2ghz -- not everything IMO with overclocking "makes sense" 100% of the time

what are your other voltages? vtt, NB, SB, etc...

these actually will effect your fsb on the p5n/p5n32-e/p5n32-e sli plus etc...

1T is more stressful than 2T... you'll need more vdimm to run 1T vs. 2T

VCore is 1.38125v, Vchipset is 1.393v, Vmem is 2.013v.

There is no southbridge option.

I've already tried even the highest
