Problem overclocking a 633MHz CeleronII

Hi there,

When I try to overclock, I run into weird problems. Here are my system specs :

Celeron II 633 (66 x 9.5)
Asus CUV4X
128MB PC133 + 64MB PC100 RAM
Guillemot 3D Prophet (GeForce SDR 32MB, not overclocked (yet ))
Western Digital 15 Gig HD
Quantum Fireball 13 Gig HD
...

First of all, when I go up to 75MHz FSB, after something like 20 minutes of normal operation, the system will just lock. No more mouse movement, etc. I have to press Reset. I find this strange.

And if I try to go to 83.3MHz FSB or higher, the system will not even start up. The drives rev up, but no image comes on the screen, and the system doesn't POST.

I have pretty good cooling. I replaced the GF's fan with a better one, put some heatsinks on it's memory chips with arctic silver compound, I have a case fan in the front blowing towards the back and a Golden Orb on my CPU, with arctic silver too. The temperature never goes above 45-50 degrees C, even just after the system has locked up. So I don't understand what's happening.

Could the mix of 100 and 133 MHz RAM be causing some problems? I didn't try running with the 128MB 133MHz DIMM only, but I guess I should try that.

And could the GeForce be causing the problems at 83.3MHz FSB and above?

I'd really like to squeeze a bit more speed out of my system, just for the sake of not having paid for the arctic silver and upgraded my GF's fan for nothing... But right now, it only runs stable at 66 and 68 MHz FSB speeds.

Thanks,

Get an older pII processor that is for a 100mhz or 133mhz bus. Then try setting the bus at 75. If you still get the same problem, then your components can't handle the higher bus. Else you got a dud of a processor.

Make sure you got a thin layer of heatsink paste. Also, are you using decent cooling, something like a golden orb?

I bought three 633. One did 950 air cooled, 980 w/ peltier, next one did 900 air cooled, 950 peltier. The last one can't even do 950 w/ peltier... If its the CPU, that's just luck of the draw.

You didnt mention any voltage bumps. I would try for a straight 100mhz. Bump the voltage up .1v at a time. until its stable. Ive found that my cel 600@945 runs good with 1.9v for about an hour or so, but i have to bump it to around 2v to get it to be stable for the long run. Your milage may vary though.

The orb should be enough cooling for that chip@100fsb. Mine done fine @100fsb, but wouldnt go any higher. Had to go with a pep66.

Good Luck
