i have a question on the highpoint controller. can you put in cdrom or zip drive on the highpoint controller ide channel? i have win2k on one channel, and the cdrom on the other channel, but whenver the system boots, it goes into fatal operation.... is there any reason? thanks

It is better to put the CDRom on IDE 1 or 2 and put your main drive on IDE 3 or 4
CDRoms and Burners should not be used on the Hopoint controller as they may not work

Yes, it's definitely recommended to put CD-ROMS, zip drives and the like on the regular UDMA-33 controller...

Does it actually cause problems, have people actually done it and documented that CDROM's and burners don't work well on the controller? Or are people simply going with the "put hard drives on the faster controller" maxim and making it sound like you'll have problems if you don't? Technically there should be no problem with any ATA device running on the controller, however you'd normally put your hard drives on the faster controller in order to maximize performance, if your hard drives are a faster rating than your CDROM's.

that's exactly what i was thinking. theoretically it seems ok for me, but whenever i put the cdrom on the highpoint controller (i have tried two diff boards with the highpoint controller), the win2k crashes... but i have no idea whether that's the controller problem or mine. i have tried different bios for the controller.

I had a Highpoint chip based Siig card... I had nightmares with it.

While our two situations may be completely different, card was a nightmare to work with. It consistently corrupted data on a pair of perfectly fine hard drives, and was finicky about identifying anything else I connected to it.

Toss it and get a $20 Promise card. Works flawlessly. :)
