Need some help. I'm not a networking expert, and my search for the answer on the web didn't yield any results.
Here's the set up:
Machine 1: Work notebook which I log on as a member of the domain (user@company.com), and connect to VPN.
Machine 2: Home desktop which I log on with an account that has admin rights. This machine belongs to the default workgroup, called "WORKGROUP"
Here's what I can do:
Map C: drive from Machine 1 on Machine 2 using user@company.com username, and the appropriate password.
Here's what I cannot do:
Map C: drive from Machine 2 to Machine 1 using MACHINE2_NAME\username and the appropriate password (through log on as different user). In this case, the dialog box to log keeps popping up, and I tried IP_ADDRESS\username and MACHINE_NAME\username, and just username. After a couple of attempts the log on with MACHINE_NAME\Guest pops up.
I can ping the machines from fine from one to another by their IP addresses. Also I can see Machine 2 (home desktop) by hostname in the Machine 1's (notebook) My Network Places\Entire Network\Microsoft Windows Network\Workgroup. I can also establish a successful Remote Desktop connection to Machine 2 from Machine 1 (i.e., the direction mapping of the drive doesn't work).
I didn't set either of the C: drives with enabled sharing. I thought I didn't need to since I can map one way, hoping I can map the other way without setting the sharing on.
Any ideas what could be preventing the mapping of the drive?
Thanks,
