Is there something very specific that you have to do in order for a CD to be bootable? I don't think I quite understand this...
I had the contents of a password crack program copied to a thumb drive by calling someone on the phone and requesting a password crack CD... I was expecting ERD commander but it's obvious that when the thumbdrive got to our camp that that's not what was copied to the thumb drive... some other password crack program perhaps... whatever it was I burned it to CD and it wouldn't boot.
I have several laptops (network admin for a military unit) with an old unkown admin password but the users of these laptops having moved from one domain to another will need to be added to the new domain and with that, access to their old profiles.
I had someone bring me a copy tonight, of erd commander 2003. Now I used this program a lot a year and half ago in Iraq as laptops tend to go from one camp to the next with the marines that use them... but their usual computer gurus don't follow them so often passwords are simply reset. Normally I would have brought my own personal copy of erd with me on this specific excercise but I was left under the impression that I wouldn't need 'anything' network wise (I should have brought all my stuff anyway).
Anyway... with this particular copy of erd that just arrived... it won't boot! I can view the contents of the CD on computers I can already log into but the disc won't boot so I can utilize the locksmith feature. I ensured bios were not an issue (boot order).
Is there a very specific way of burning a disc so that it boots... I guess I was under the impression of there simply needing to be a certain file type on the root of the disc that told the computer what was up. I did some research and some CD burning programs supposedly don't support making 'bootable' discs... is it possible the copy I had made and brought out here today was made using such a program that doesn't allow it to boot?
If anyone has some hints it'd be much appreciated... wether it be a different freeware program I can use temporarily, or a specific way of burning the contents off the supposed ERD disc I have now to a new blank CD to the point that it will boot.
