Problem loading XP after new hardware install

Hi, I need a little help.

I just upgraded my mobo, cpu, ram, and power supply. I already had a Windows XP Corporate Edition installation on my hard drive. After installing all of the new hardware, I did a repair installation of XP so that it would get the updated drivers for the new hardware. Everything seemed to be going fine until it was time for Windows to load. The computer just reboots at this point every time. It reboots right before the Windows XP logo screen should appear.

I decided to load a copy of XP Pro on another hard drive I had. Windows booted fine with this installation. I am not sure why I am getting reboots with my XP corporate installation, because it was working just fine with my old hardware. Could it be some installed software causing the problem or could it just be a bad windows installation? I really don't feel like formatting the drive, since it will take a while to get everything back how I had it.

Yes you should. My guess is that the repair overwrote the Windows XP system files, but did not remove the old driver files. More than likely, your old driver files and registry settings from before you reinstalled it are still there.

Thanks. I've been wanting to try out the XP 64 bit os anyway.

what you should have done is install the IDE drivers on the old system before you tore it down... put all the new stuff together and then try to boot.

I don't know for sure, but I'd be willing to bet you're getting an inaccessible boot device error.

at this point, formatting is easiest.
