I don't know what happened but I cannot change the file extension of any file. Text files media files. As soon as I hit enter the original extension is restored. I can change the name but that is all.

Have you set Explorer to show all extensions? That's about all that I can think of right away.

Tools Menu
Folder Options
View tab
Uncheck "Hide extensions for known file types"

What about the commandline? What happens if you change the extension there, using the rename command?

I have show extensions enabled and I tried the always show extensions option with no avail.

I have not tried renaming in from the command prompt and will as soon as I get to the computer.

OK, I tried the command prompt and it worked but when I once again tried to change the same file back through explorer it failed once again.

Any ideas as to what is causing this and how to fix it?

Thanks

I restarted the system and I can change the file types again.

But now at boot I get an, Error: Loader couldn't initialize service! error.

I can hit OK and Explorer is not loaded. I can start it from task manager or I can log of at which pint it will automatically log back on. Explorer and all my startup programs will run and everything works fine.

The only thing as I said before, I cannot log of as the system logs back on immediately. Window-L to switch users works.

I have no errors in the event log.

This is not directly related, but since whatever caused me not to change the extensions before is causing this problem, maybe it can be fixed.

Is there any way to see the exact script that is running and fails and at what point and what service is not starting?

Thanks

I noticed that I could not change the extension again so I restarted the system and I could after that. It seems that something or for some reason I lose the ability to change the extension. Maybe the prompt asking if I want to change automatically selects not for some reason.

Anybody know what controls this feature.

Thanks again.
