Problem installing XP O/S?

I'm doing fresh install on some older equipment: P3 700, 128meg, Matrox vid and I get the following error after the it's done copying files and reboots?

"Error:
Installation Failed: C:\$WIN_NT$~LS\I386\asms. Error Message: The Manafest file does not begin with the reguired tag and format information.

Fatal Error:
One of the compents that Windows needs to continus setup could not be installed.

The Manafest file does not begin with the reguired tag and format information.

***"

Doing XP w\SP1

Any ideas?

Not sure. Did you wipe the hard drive before the install? The manifest file is I believe used so that Setup knows what files were copied and where so that it can continue the install. It seems to be getting corrupted or not properly saved before the system reboots.

The $WIN_NT$.~LS and $WIN_NT$.~BT directories are the temporary directories windows
installed to your harddrive prior to installation. These or your CD is corrupt.
This could have occured due to bad ram, bad blocks on the harddrive or read errors
on the CD-ROM. Try reformatting with the /u switch to locate bad blocks, then different copy of XP, and doing the install barebones with a known good stick of ram
