Problem installing win2k due to Mandrake

I am trying to fix a computer that has been totally messed up. Someone, using partionmagic, deleted the linux partitions and made a single fat32 partition. They then restarted and used fdisk to format the entire drive and make a single partition.

Now I am trying to install win2k using the bootdisks. The bootdisks work fine. When I go to restart, I get the mandrake sequence:

stage1, stage2....then it goes to a prompt that says grub>

How can I get around this to install 2000? Where are these linux commands located so I can remove them? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

It sounds like they installed GRUB on the MBR when they installed linux.

To clear the MBR, boot up with a DOS bootdisk the has fdisk (it may be on your win2k boot disks) and do a fdisk /mbr. Then reinstall win2k.

Using a Win98 or better boot disk, run FDISK, delete the NON-DOS partitions, and ALL other partitions. Create the new partition or partitions. Start Win2K and you'll be prompted to format it in FAT or NTFS.

Always run FDISK before installing an operating system. Five minutes of work saves you a lot of frustration.
