Problem installing UT2K4 from CDs

Okay, so I sit down to install the copy of UT2k4 (for the PC, the CD-ROM version -- I'm running XP Home and have LiteOne DVD burner) that I just got from GoGamer, and I begin the installation process, type in the CD key, and the first disk starts copying files. 30 seconds in, I get a "Critical Error" that says:

Failed reading source file: D:\Animations\ThunderCrash.ukx (The operation completed successfully.)

The source media may be bad. If installing from a CD, try cleaning the CD to remove any dirt, check your CD drive, and try again.

The CD looks pristine, and I've cleaned it anyway, just to be sure. The drive has worked with everything else I've put in it, and is still working with other CDs. So is the UT2k4 disc just defective? I haven't installed many PC games, so I've never seen this before. Is there anything I can try that I haven't done yet?

I've tried installing a few times, and keep getting the same error message. Sometimes it lists a different file that's causing the error. Once, the entire first disc installed successfully, but the second disc gave me a similar error (that in particular is confusing me).

After playing around with the CD, here are some things I've tried:

Copying the "ThunderCrash.ukx" file that gave me the error -- I was able to copy the file to my desktop with no error.

Copying the contents of the entire first CD -- I was able to copy the entire contents of the CD to a folder on my desktop with no error. In fact I tried running the installation program from that folder (I'm not sure if this would work, but it seemed worth a shot). I got a similar error message (different file, though).

Installing from safe mode -- on another board, it was recommended that I try rebooting into safe mode and installing that way. I tried it and got the same error on the first CD. It was also recommended that while in regular mode, I disable the screen saver and background programs before installing, but I assume running in safe mode should have taken care of that.

I guess I'm going to return the game and get a new copy, but this problem seems so strange (at least to me, given my relative inexperience with PC games) that I fear a new set of discs might not fix it. Anything else I should try (maybe copying the first CD and seeing if that works and if the copied version can install without errors)? Anyone run into this problem before?

Could be the copy protection, as BFG10K hints at. Installing the latest patch will remove the copy protection, but you need a successful install first :(

If you have a non-burner drive, use that. If you have any virtual CD programs you may need to uninstall them.

If the store you bought it from won't exchange it, you could likely "acquire" another copy of UT2k4 & use your CD key for it, since it sounds as if it may be damaged.

BTW, i'm «n7» online if you ever wanna look me up :)

i've had a quite similar experience while installing FarCry..

at first it was due to a bad media ( the CD )
but after trying a couple of times i've found out that the error was because of my o/c'ed system ( FSB overclocking ) after lowering my FSB acouple o' MHz the installation went smoothly.

so if your system is oc'ed try lowering it a few nothces down.

I only have the one optical drive in my system, unfortunately, a Lite-On DVD burner (I'm not OC'ing anything, either). I'm not running any virtual CD programs, as far as I know (I installed the NERO OEM Suite that came with the burner -- I don't think that has a virtual CD program in it, but could that be causing the problem?) I've returned the disc and should be getting new ones from GoGamer soon, so I'll see if that fixes it. It just seems very strange that the CD would generate errors in different places.

Also, and I don't know if this is related (or, if it is, what this means), but as I wait for the new discs, I downloaded the demo, and I get an error installing the demo. Every time I try to install the demo, I get an error that one of the files is corrupted (the weird thing is it's not always the same file.) Could this be related to the problems installing the real game, or just a bad download?

A virus / worm / trojan / spyware can corrupt files as they are downloaded, you should probably read the sticky thread here.

It could possibly be a memory issue. It could be a failing hard drive or messed up file system.

If you've switched graphics card families (ATI <-> nvidia) it could be driver conflicts.
