I was helping a buddy of mine trying to install some software he got for Christmas. Every time we tried to run the install from the CD we would get an error. Didn't matter if it was auto run or using the run from the start menu. The error indicated a file was missing from W98 (startup.??. He told me that another friend did some cleaning of files on the HD. I suspect he removed something that he shouldn't have. Is there a way to re-run W98 setup so that all the files get replaced but leave his system settings and other software as is? Oh by the way, he has an E-Machine and it came preloaded with W98 and did not come with the W98 CD. I do have a CD, but I'm sure the key does not match his installed key. Any help?

It doesn't matter if the keys match as long as the OS is the same. The Windows CD might be preloaded on the HD, look in Windows\Options or Windows\Options\Cabs to see if a bunch of .cab files are there. If so, just point Windows to that dir if it ever asks for the Windows CD. Also, my sister has an Emachine and it came with a "Restore" CD that has Win 98SE on it. Does he have one of those?

Using the Restore CD would be a abad Idea as most OEM CD reformat the HDD. Look in c:\Windows\Options\Cabs for the setup and run it from there... All system setting should remain the same.
