Problem installing HP Officejet v40 on Compaq running XP

A friend just purchased a brand new Compaq with XP + HP Officejet v40 printer/scanner/fax.
Upon boot, the printer is found and recognized immediately, but when the drivers are being installed, an error occurs: Code 28 - Invalid data. The drivers being installed come with XP and there are NO HP drivers (won't be available till April!).
I tried installing an older HP printer on the same PC, and the same thing happened! Is the crappby Compaq to blame, or is there an issue with XP and HP? Or is there something else???
Thanx!

Actually, it's probably niether compaq or HP's fault. It's windowsXP. That's a weird one. Honestly, I'd tell a customer to reinstall windows. There's probably a way to fix it, but only microsoft would know how. And guess what? If the operating system is an OEM version (puchased from compaq), microsoft won't provide support. You can try system restore and roll back the computer to an earlier date. If that doesn't work, you'll have to reinstall windows. Or call compaq and let them tell you to reinstall windows 😉Compaq probably shipped a recovery disk with the computer.
Even if you did wait for the software to come out in April for the v40, it probably wouldn't work. Sorry 😕
