Problem Importing files from xp home to xp pro

I recently sold one of my computers ( stripped-- no OS, Software, or hard drive ) that had XP home on it and went back to and older computer that had win 98se. I had a spare(new) hard drive lying around and decided that I wanted a clean install of XP pro on it. I had intended to just import some of the files and such from XP home to my new install of XP pro via connecting both hard drives to the same ata cable. Pro as master and Home as slave. I assumed that the drive with XP pro would recognise the XP home disk, but it wont. I realize that im an idiot for not backing up the files and such that I had wished to keep. :disgust: If anyone would be so kind as to help/inform me of how to get the crap I should have backed up I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks.

check the jumpers on the drives ? does it show up in the bios ?sure the cable is good ? try the home drive on the other channel ?do a repair install on the home drive and then backup the info ?
good luck

What do you mean by won't recognize? Does the drive show up in disk manager? If not, fool with the hardware (wrong jumper settings or something).

I tried the jumpers..... The drive with xp home will only be recognised if it is set for cable select..... With the drive set for c/s it will show up on either channel...... However if I put the home drive on secondary channel and the pro drive on the primary channel then the only the pro drive will show up upon boot......( thats with the jumper on the home drive set for c/s---known to work--- and pro set for master)..... Reverse/switch the hard drives and niether will show up in the bios or in set up..... Now with the home drive on primary channel and set for c/s it will boot, but to a point where it ends up saying something to the fact that there was an error and that win. was not able to run or something and it gives me the option to boot from safe mode, safe with, normal etc....The only one that even gives the impression that someting is running or is about to boot to win. is in safe mode but then it just hangs..... As far as tring to restore xp Im not sure how exactly to do this ...... I did try it and it asks me for what win. I would like to access and if I type in (1) then it asks me for admisitrator password.....I do not know what it is..... I did have a password set up for my computer but it does not seem to be the one Im needing. Thanks, Apple
