cpu1: pc100 128ram, p3 700, asus p3v4x
cpu2: pc133 128ram, p3 800, spacewalker
different cases

i was swapping mb/chip/ram from one comp to another. now, 1 works..the other doesn't. the one that doesnt work is the asus one. there is no OS on the problematic one. when i power on, the keyboard lights light up once and then the keyboard is inoperatable. Also, i noticed the cpu fan wasn't on. Prior to this, the mb/chip/ram have been operatable... and as far as i know, it was rock solid. the keyboard also works, and i have tried replacing the keyboard... same result. i also double checked the slots. I replaced the power supply... no dice. i have tested the system with only the minimal components (video card, hdd, cpu only). i have tested it with the mb outside of the case. I dont know what to make of this. the system boots up... its goes past BIOS... and to dos... BUT, the keyboard doesn't work and the cpu fan doesnt turn on... and prior to moving the mb/cpu/ram... it (asus/pc100ram/p3 700) was a rock solid system. HELP!

possible solutions: i'm thinking the 2 power supplies i have tried are not powerful enough. But i really don't have anything to base that on. Or i did something to the asus mb while moving it from case to case. maybe it is the case... i've heard suggestions that maybe the case is shorting it somehow...

initial conditions:
cpu1: pc100 128ram, asus mb, p3 700, caseA (don't know the name)
-worked perfect
cpu2: pc133 128ram, spacewalker mb, p3 800, caseB
-never tested by myself... supposedly works. has no OS installed on hdd.

after:
swapped cases (hdd/cdrom stayed on cases)
the spacewalker p3 800 works fine. its the asus p3 700 that is problematic.

so you never tried the skywalker out when it was in case b right? now the skywlaker is in case a, and the asus is in case b right? on case b remove the psu, look for a label on it, find out the rated wattage, could be 145 250 300 350 400, probbly 250 or 300 watt range,

arkaoss: correct.

i will check the wattage after work.
another question. ok, i've looked at the wattage..and it says XYZ... so what does that mean? you listed: 145 250 300 350 400, probbly 250 or 300 watt range. how do i know what the cutoff voltage is? do some mb's require more power? or possibly the cpu fan requires more power and since it is not getting it, it doesn't turn on.

other things i have heard are that the case can possibly short the mb... i believe i tested the system with the mb out of the case, but perhaps i left a screw in one of the holes or did it incorrectly.

-read your other thread, the ibm hdd was originally with the asus... which was a working combo, then moved the ibm to the spacewalker.which is also a working combo.
