Problem I Have With All CD Drives...

For some reason, ever since this computer was built, it has had trouble with CD-based drives. Whether reading or writing, it always pops up sooner or later. For some reason, when doing a protracted install, or sometimes when burning a disc, the CD drives will start to speed up and slow down. They will continue this during the whole course of the read/write once they have started. The first time it happened with my CD drive I RMAd it. Turns out the drive wasn't the problem.

Could it be a problem with my motherboard? I have an ABIT KT7 RAID, though I'm not running a RAID array on it at this time.

Could it be the power supply? I have an Antec case, and my PS is either 350 or 400 watts, I cannot recall which.

I am going to be upgrading soon, as my machine is fairly far behind the technology curve now and is having some problems with frequent lock-ups. I wanted to know if it could be the PS causing the CD drive problems though, so I could pick up a new one to install in the case when I upgrade.

do you have DMA enabled under device manager for your cd drives?

Do they work in DOS ok?

are these quality disks you are using, or cheapie copies?

sounds like a motherboard on it's way out to pasture. Might be time to look into maybe a new motherboard/cpu combo?

Another thing, have you inspected your motherboard very carefully for any 'puffed' and bad capacitors?
Some of the older Abit boards were notorious for having bad capacitors, and some of the first warning signs are frequents lock-ups, non-responsiveness, and random reboots.

good luck 🙂

It was doing the CD thing back when the machine was built. The lock-ups are a more recent occurance. Will check the motherboard more closely when I pull the thing apart to upgrade.

No idea.

Never used them in DOS.

It's not just burning, it's reading. When I do burn, I try to use quality discs.

For some reason it hates any of my Blizzard games like WarCraft III, Diablo II and LOD, and StarCraft. I always have to make multiple install attempts. Those aren't the only games it has happened with though.
