I am trying to get into my Internet Explorer option and it tells me "the operation has been canceled due to restrictions in effect on this computer. Please contact your system administrator." I'm the only one that uses this computer. I am running Windows XP. I would appreciate the help

If you are trying to do tis on a network at work, the sys admin might have setup a custom security policy so that you cannot go in there and mess with it.
If it is on your home computer and isn't working I don't have an answer for you.
Good luck.

One cause of this is installing Spybot Search & Destroy and having it lock your IE options from being opened from within IE. If that is the case, you can go to Control Panel and open Internet Options from there.

If you don't have Spybot S&D or other such stuff locking that setting, then the next question is whether you've got a current antivirus program and maybe antispyware software too (if you run IE with an Admin-class account especially).

(yeah, and if it's someone else's computer then don't go stepping on toes ;) )

I tried shutting down my antivirus, and that still did not work.I have Kaspersky 2006 antivirus and Kaspersky anti-hacker. It made my homepage some kind of porno web site.

1) there is no Kaspersky 2006 that I'm aware of. Is this from a legit source? If it's not, you got 0wned and it's time to Drop The Bomb On It? with a full reinstall of Windows. If it is legit, then set it to use Extended Databases (this setting is in Threats & Exclusions) and scan again.

2) Right-click this link and save it (it's a text file). Also save WinSockFix.

3) Disable System Restore (holler if you need help)

4) Reboot into Safe Mode (holler if you need help with this too)

5) Follow the directions in the text file. When the scan is complete, reboot into regular Windows operation. If your browser is not working then you're going to want to run WinSockFix.

I completed the scan, but I cannot find where it saved the scan results under c:\. I'm still not able to get into my Internet Explorer options.

There's no C:\report.html file in there? The only times I've seen it fail to make one, is if the scanner did not actually complete its scan. Did you try cranking up Kaspersky to maximum everything, including the Extended Databases, update it, and run a scan with it in Safe Mode too?

I just found the report and it said I only had one virus, and it deleted it. It also found 3 noncritical errors, and it deleted 13 files. So I don't know what else to do. I really appreciate your help mechBgon.

Thanks for the update :) If you want to PM me the contents of the report, it might help me research what virus it was, and maybe find out what Registry keys that particular virus messes with to keep you from changing homepage and stuff.
