Problem getting 5.1 sound on Logitech Z680

My younger sister just received the speakers, she is unable to get 5.1 sound, only 2 speakers are working. The speakers are connected to the soundcard through direct 6 channel in. The soundcard is built-in, nForce1 chipset (Mobo is asus A7N266VM, if I remember correctly).
She tried changing the audio properties (on the pc) to 5.1 surround sound, tried all the effects including Prologic II Music on the speaker (which should convert 2 speaker sounds from the direct input to 5.1) but it didn't work either. Any ideas could be wrong here?

If you are using the Nforce drivers make sure you are using analog outs and not the digital outs.

What is the sounds source that you want 5.1 on? If you are playing a DVD it should automatically switch over (assuming you have analog outs selected in the dvd player as well as in the hardware configuration).

You will get 5.1 out otherwise if you select the dolby encoding in the setup menu, the other boxes below it will do things like create the LFE channel etc. from a less than 5.1 source. You should see the input on the z680s say dolby digital when the NForce APU is encoding DD. I turn it on and off according to if I'm playing games or listening to music because the distortion is aweful (over digital, haven't tried with analog).

I'm trying to solve the problem remotely, I'm not near the system.
The output is analog 6 channel out.
If you are playing a DVD it should automatically switch over (assuming you have analog outs selected in the dvd player as well as in the hardware configuration).
I didn't get you, Are you talking about a standalone DVD player or the PC DVDROM? coz she's tried it on a PC, she's using stereo mp3, haven't tried DVDs on the PC (no DVD ROM on the PC yet).

I'll ask her to get the nForce APU to encode it to 5.1 but I guess that'll be software based which will take CPU cycles.

Shouldn't the 680's convert the 2 speaker sound to 5.1 when using the Prologic II Music?

Are you using Nvidia's motherboard sound or using a Audigy PcI sound card? If you're using your motherboards, what type of mobo is it? Brand , name, etc.. You do have it set to a 5 speaker set up in the Windows Control panel and the Audigy/Nvidia control panels right?
