I am at a loss. For some reason my computer won't recognize my Canon A75 camera, so I can't download the pictures from the camera. I have windows XP and should be able to just hook up the camera through usb, but it doesn't recognize the camera. I hooked the camera up to a friends computer and it worked perfectly, so it's obviously something wrong with my computer. I'm at a loss, so any help would be appreciated.

Did you install the Canon software that came with the camera?

I have been using digital cameras (now on my 6rh one) for several years and only tried that trick once. It is clumsy, slow, and inefficient.

Forget the USB cable connection - get yourself a USB Reader/Writer that accepts your camera memory chip directly. It is faster and ust about goof-proof.

You can solve your problem and extend the life of your camera at the same time as you vastly increase the speed of your downloads. Just buy a card reader and use that. USB 2.0 or Firewire is best if you have those ports, otherwise, USB 1 will still be faster than downloading from the camera, and not wear out your camera's connector. The Canon Zoombrowser Camera Window will see the CF card just like it sees the camera (or is supposed to see the camera).

Invest in a cardreader. Well worth the money for transfers and comes in handy in case you ever (and you will one day) need to recover deleted images.

I have that camera and do not use the software that came with it.

The XP SP2 PC recognizes the camera when connected to the USB port as long as the camera is set to view images. If the camera is set to take pictures, it will not be recognized by the PC this way.

I'm having the same problem too. My mom has a Canon A70, and that one worked fine with my current setup, XP SP1. I uninstalled verything that came with the A70 and installed all the software for the A75 and I still get device could not be recongnized. I'm trying to install a WIA driver from Canon for XP but that keeps telling me driver failed to update. I'm going nuts. Oh and I do have the camera in view mode, thats a noob mistake, but he's right. The A70 also ahs to be in view mode for widows to detect it when you plug it in. I will let you know if I figure it out.

Well I finally gave up and went out and bought a stupid flash card reader. They had one for 10 bucks at Staples. It's not worth your time trying to troubleshoot it. Plugged in the PNY flashcard reader and it worked great. Kind of nice too because you don't drain your batteries downloading pics.
