Problem deleting file under windows and linux

I just downloaded a game file onto my harddrive, but the file is causing my computer to slow down considerably. Under Windows XP, I can't delete the file because everytime I select it and try to delete it, the OS would crash. When I run Knoppix, right off the CD, I get an error message saying it is a read only file system even after I mounted the drive with write permissions. Any ideas as to what the problem is?

Try booting the system into Safemode and deleting the file from there. And what is the file extension?

Makes sense that Knoppix says it's a read-only file system, as you're running it off a CD. Can't write to a CD (that's been finalized).

Anyway, I'd download a dos bootdisk from bootdisk.com. Boot up with it and change directories to the one with the file and get rid of it there, assuming Safe Mode doesn't work.

DOS can't read NTFS partitions, therefore I am unable to delete the file. Which version of dos can read NTFS partitions? The problem with Knoppix is that I have already mounted the harddrive with write permissions and I am accessing the harddrive through the Knoppix CD, but I still am unable to delete the file.

Certain dos utilities can read ntfs drives, but writing/deleting costs some bucks.

Just read on Tom's Hardware that while Knoppix 3.3 can read NTFS, it cannot write to it. Version 3.4 is supposed to have read/write capability.

However, Tom's points to another .iso you can download that's based on Knoppix (runs off of CD) that DOES have read/write NTFS capability.

It's called "Project Insert". Get it here.
