Hi Guys Again,
As you know i just bought the MSI R9 290X after a lot of help from you guys, so much appreciation this is the link for my previous Thread

The problem is that i have a Monitor that has an VGA Output or Input i don't know :p anyway it's a VGA ,and my R9 Doesn't have the VGA output obviously it has only HDMI and DVI , so i had to buy this Cable but it's seems not working whatever i did.

I didn't even know a passive HDMI to VGA cable was a thing. If your monitor *only* has VGA, methinks it's time for a new monitor.

HDMI has no analog signal on it, I cannot see how one of these cables would work.

for the mean time i can't afford to buy a new monitor cause i spent all my money buying the R9 And the PSU , i will for sure in the near future but for now i can't so i found that there's away to make this happen ,i know that the HDMI and VGA Signal are way various but i found that there's a device can convert those signals like this one;

but i am not totally sure so i ask to confirm.

Is this your card?

If it is, then you should note this.



The dvi ports are DVI-D meaning they only carry digital signal.

More on the DVI here.

All in all, your card does not produce any analog signal.

To be frank I find it strange since my Gigabyte 970 still has one DVI-I on board. People may still use analog, like you.

In any case that's why the guys told you to look for an active converter. You are in a situation that you need a device to do the conversion for you.

Unfortunately I am also all digital and I have no adapter in mind that works for sure.

VGA will never work with HDMI or DVI because VGA is not digital transmitted. I would buy a VGA to HDMI OR DVI converter adapter. Those off the shelf cables wont work.

yes this is my card ,so there's no chance to make it work even with the HDMI to VGA ,i don't know what to do ,i really in hurry and i need it to work ,what about this converter is it at least gonna work

I Saw many others use those cable to convert DVI to VGA with no problems ,u can check youtube to make sure.

It seems to be what you need, but I also see a phone number in there.

Give them a call, explain the situation and they will help you in a better way, since they know their product.

I did so in the past as well.

But this was on DVI-I not DVI-D.

Your DVI ports do not even have the analog holes.

But just in case just check, you may have a different revision if one exists.

I have seen crazier stuff with PCs.

I'll give them a call for sure ,but the product it's a little expansive haha , i will go with this choice in last ,for now i will try with the cheapest ones ,what about this one

I'm pretty sure the cable I linked is a display port to VGA active adapter, so it will work, people have been using it with radeons for eyefinity since 2009 (when DP to HDMI active was expensive)

the adapter you posted seems to be an HDMI to VGA cable that is probably not supposed to work, it doesn't seem to have the required hardware inside for this conversion, and your HDMI port can't output VGA signal, so not the same thing at all.

so by looking at the pictures I would expect the cable I linked to work, the one in your post to not work.

Thank you. Finally someone comes up with the right answer.

DVI-D: Not designed to be easily converted to analog
HDMI: Not designed to be easily converted to analog
DisplayPort: Designed to be easily converted to analog

DP->VGA active adapters are relatively cheap and plentiful. They are designed for exactly this situation.

I've seen people having problem with cheap DP adapters, but the cable on the first link seems to be similar to the one I posted, and I would expect it to work in your case...

thank you i am happy that u said that (it's gonna work) hahah ,so in my situation i have to solution either i'll go with the DVI-D or this Female VGA right ?
