Problem connecting to the LAN at work via VPN

Here's the thing ...

I'm having problems connecting to the VPN server at work, which I think is something from Microsoft, a part of the ISA server ...

I created a new connection through "My network places" in WinXP, and chose to make a VPN connection.
I have the correct IP of the VPN server, and I can connect initally, but when I enter my login credentials and click OK, it just hangs at "Verifying username and password ..." for about a minute and then spits out an error message, saying "Error 721: The remote computer did not respond ...."
Atleast 2 of my collegues had no problem connecting to this VPN server from their homes, using the exact same settings as I did.

But here's the thing ... I suspected that this had got something to do with my ADSL router (ASUS), so my SysAdmin borrowed me another ADSL-router (SMC Barricade). I plugged that router in and then I had no problem connecting to the VPN server, it worked like a charm.

I was wondering what could be the issue with my current router? What is it that could possibly be preventing the connection to the VPN server? Perhaps It's a configuration issue of some kind, or is there something special a router must support in order to allow VPN connections through ?

I can't remember the exact model number of my ASUS router, but it's almost 3 years old, and doesn't have built in WiFi or a switch.

:frown:

Does your ASUS router support VPN passthrough (PPTP, IPSec, L2TP)? This may be the problem since if it doesn't support these features then it would not allow VPN packets to enter your LAN.

If your router is too old I would recommend a Linksys WRT54g or WRT54gs. They are fast, very stable and have a good feature set.

bingo. VPNs don't work over network address translation (home router) unless the VPN itself is setup to use "nat traversal" or if the router supports "VPN pass through"

Thanks guys. That's what I needed to know.

Before we upgraded to the Microsoft ISA server, we were using a hardware VPN box from Cisco and I had no problem connecting to that using a Cisco VPN client, I guess it was set up to use "nat traversal" or something.

Anyway, my employer gave me a new ADSL/Wifi/router (SMC Barricade 8). I've tested it and it works perfectly.
