Problem connecting to IEEE1394 hardware

I just installed a tekram firewire card to my pc. (440BX, Pentium 3, Windows 2000 pro). No problems with the installation, the card instantly appeared in the Device Manager.

When I tried connecting my printer (epson 2100), and my digital camera (nikon d1x), neither of them are recognized. I reinstalled the drivers for both, but no luck. When I tried re-installing the printer, windows can't even detect it. In the past, it has worked fine using USB 1.1.

I thought the firewire interface is supposed to be easy plug n' play.
