SInce you cant ping or ping with marginal success when you are able to get an echo response, start troubleshooting the hardware. Do you have any other NIC's you can try? Can you ping the loopback and local address sucessfully? Are they timing out when you cannot ping? I know you said you tried another cable. Are these crossovers home made?
 
Different NIC's is about the only thing I haven't tried so that's definitely on the agenda. I think I understand what you mean by pinging the "loopback" and "local address" successully. The answer is "yes," I can successfully ping each system's own IP address. They do time out when I can't ping the other system. The crossover cables are store-bought, not home made.
