yo anandtech forums (first time posting)

when i change any settings on my asus a7n8x (regular) mobo concerning the chipset like the multipier or the fsb and hit save and exit cmos the computer goes dead, the screen goes black, and wont do anything it just stands there. then i have to restart it and the computer says that its in safemode at 100 mhz fsb and i have to change it back to stock settings (and that is 333 fsb and 12.5 multiplier) before it will work. This happens whether im trying to overclock or underclock. so whats the deal?

heres my system:
asus a7n8x (regular)
athlon 2800+
1 gig pc3200 ram
9800 pro (heck yeah)
5 case fans, high quality hsf on cpu, and a vanteq iceberQ pro on the gfx card, with temps usually at 40C

Your CPU is multiplier locked, which means you can't change the multiplier through the motherboard.

As for changing the FSB, you may have set it too high for your CPU or components to handle. Your CPU has a 12.5 multiplier, so at 200FSB it's running at 2500MHz, which is a stretch for a desktop Barton. Your PCI/AGP components may also need to be set to a lower divider if your CPU isn't limiting your overclock.
