Take Note of Stores' Return Policy When Holiday Shopping
TALLAHASSEE ? As the official holiday shopping season begins this week, Florida Agriculture and Consumer Services Commissioner Bob Crawford today urged consumers to make certain that they understand a store's policy on returning or exchanging merchandise before they make a purchase.
"Many stores have liberal return or exchange policies, while others do no accept returns at all," Crawford said. "That's important to know, especially when shopping for others, when you may be uncertain about sizes or styles."
If a store has a return policy, which typically requires a receipt, Florida law requires that it grant a refund on the merchandise within seven days of the date of purchase provided that the item is unused and in its original carton. Fortunately, most stores that allow returns will accept returns for longer periods of time, particularly during and after holiday shopping seasons.
Some stores, however, regard all sales as final and do not allow consumers to return merchandise. If that is the case, they must post a notice of the policy at the point of sale.
"The bottom line is that it is up to an individual retailer to determine what its policy is," Crawford said. "Shoppers should familiarize themselves with those policies before they make a purchase, and use that policy to determine where they do their shopping."
This was from 1998, so things may have changed.
