OK, I just started using XP on a couple of machines, one is my new Q6600. So I put in old reliable NEC 3500, install windows and Roxio, etc.. Days later my first burn, coaster, so I do another, coaster.. So I decide, OK time for a SATA burner, this drive went bad. So it comes, and it has the same problem, and I can't erase RW diska either...

So I take the NEC 3500, put it in a win2k box, and its fine ! WTH ! Then I try the 3500 in an external enclosure on the XP box, same problem. Them I try my other XP box with a new Sony (I think it really a NEC 3550) Same problems !

So is there something about XP that stops these from working ?

Edit: Both of the boxes have Q6600 cpu's in them

Edit2: I just installed Roxio on an Opteron 170 box with XP, same problem. All my Win2k boxes are fine.

NEC 3500 works fine with WXP and Nero 6/Ashampoo 650/IMGBURN. Sounds like there's a software issue with Roxio. That program has a habit of fouling your registry. I avoid Roxio like the plague. You'll need to repair the registry or clean install WXP with another burn application to fix this problem. IMGBURN is another fantastic FREE program.

hey mark...now that I have vista on my pc i can't guide you thru the steps as well as I could have in the past. however i did have a similar problem when i had xp pro and nero installed. the problem for me was windows was trying to write for nero which caused coasters... I had to go into my drive options and turn off windows burning. then everything worked fine. i wish i could be more detailed, but it was a horrible issue with a simple fix.

Roxio was given props by MaxPC awhile ago, and it came with my NEC 3500AG (or was it my Plextor 708A?), so I gave it a go...same problem. Upgraded the software (had to register to download, I believe) and all was fine. Then after only a few burns came a day I needed to burn something for a friend, and it crapped out again. Upgrading the software again didn't help. Finally went back to Nero 6.6.

Whats NVM ?

And I am taking the Nero 7 disk that came with my retail burner and installing that.

If anybody has any more details on this "windows burning" thing, please let me know, that sure sounds like the culprit..

Edit, OK I found CD burning, and it was turned OFF for this drive. I deinstalled Roxio, installed Nero7 that cam with the disc, and when I say "erase DVD-RW, full erase, it says 33 minutes estimated, then starts, then 10 seconds later it ejects the disc. I don't want to try regular disks, as I already have 2 coasters, and on my NEC, I have NEVER had any on this media at 2x or 4x (16x media, 2 coasters in a row.

Serpant royal, thanks for the tp... It says manual, and the only options are to start the service.
