Problem booting XP Pro

I just upgraded from Win2kPro to XP Pro after I lost a fight with a virus (shifty bastard). Anyway, for the first few weeks everything was going great and then when I would boot up whereas it would normally give me the welcome screen it just shows a blue background with the thinking mouse cursor. The first few times this happened I just restarted and it went in fine. A few days later that didn't work at all, and I'd have to boot into safe mode, then shut down and boot normally to get into Windows. Now I'm afraid to turn my computer off since I don't know if it will let me back into Windows. I've done quite a few virus scans (using the web scanner from Symantec) and it's never found anything.

Does anyone have a clue?

I would try a repair install of XP. It sounds like a corrupt file. Before I did that though I would check the event viewer and see if it logged anything.
