During the early boot phase, before Windows starts to load, plugging in a USB memory device causes the bios to freeze. Simply removing the USB memory device causes the bios to continue. This problem also occurs in the bios setup dialogs. In other words, a USB memory device acts like an on/off switch; plugging it in brings the bios to all stop, removing it causes everything to continue normally.

Once Windows XP pro loads, USB memory devices work perfectly. The problem only occurs before Windows starts to load. My mobo is an Abit IC7-Max3 with the latest Phoenix-Award bios. Both the the USB ports and USB memory devices I tried are 2.0 compatible.

I want to make a bootable to DOS USB memory device so I can retire my floppy drive. I need DOS to run Ghost and every now and then the software required for various bios updates.

Well, yeah, Your pissing it off. Why plug it in during while BIOS is determing what or whats not there?

If you want to boot from USB, enable it in bios, set your boot order and leave the key plugged in. Does it havee an issue then?

I'm assuming your boor supports boot from usb.
