Problem booting PC with video card

Hello, I have this strange problem that ever since I put in my ATI Radeon 9800 PRO, sometimes my pc just hangs and refuses to boot. Most of the time my motherboard will enter "safe mode" during cold boot, which brings me directly to CMOS where it doesn't seem to allow me to do much to alleviate the situation.

CPU: Athlon 2500+
Motherboard: Asus A7V8X-X
Power: 350 W

Old video card: Radeon 9000
New card : Radeon 9800 PRO

Just a few days ago, my pc again refused to boot no matter how many times I try to cold boot it. So I swap out the new card and put the old one back in. It still refused to boot for a good hour. But once I managed to boot the pc with the old card in place, the booting process has been flawness since.

However, my old card is showing its age, and has been producing occasional screen artifacts even before I replaced it. At this point, I like to put my new card back in, but I like some opinions from you guys before I go ahead and risk not booting my pc.

In regards to the problem, I am not sure what to think at this point. I like to think my motherboard is not a problem because I could boot it with old card in place once it booted once. Another culprit I am guessing is the power supply, however, I don't have an extra one to test it on, and I don't want to buy a new one only to discover that the power is not the source of the problem.

So has anyone encounter such a problem before? How do you go about solving it? Thanks a lot in advance. 🙂

It could be resource issue, what brand is that powersupply? Also do you have latest motherboard drivers for the agp? Try removing all the ATI's drivers, install the new card and go from there. From what other memembers have stated, you need a decent powersupply these days to run all your video equipement.

Well, when I was using my newer card, my pc sometimes would not boot at all, so I doubt it was a resource or driver issue. So, I take it that it could be a power supply problem? My power supply is just one that comes with the case.

First confirm that you do have the power/molex connectot attached the 9800p (if not, should have just gotten a warning screen at POST, but ya never know?). Since the 9800p draws more power than the 9000, I think it's your PSU.
