posting this in motherboards - no bites in cpus/overclocking.
Anyone have any ideas?
thanks much...
I recently was completing the build on a seocnd P5K-E + E6700 processor when I ran into something strange. I had built the machine outside of the case, successfully tested it, then overclocked to 3.4GHz, stable for 6 hours in Orthos, temps all under 60C, etc. I then took it apart and put the machine back in the case. I booted up and everything went fine excpet CPU-Z was saying the chip was running 266x10 rather than 340x10, but the increased voltage and memory timings were still showing up as set in the bios. I went back into the bios an indeed the bios settings still showed 340 for FSB, but at post the motherboard says 2666 for the chip. I can change the multiplier and in takes, 9,8, etc. I can change the voltage or memory timings and it takes. But no matter what I set the FSB to the board always takes 266 as the value - even if I set it below, like 200.
I have followed the core 2 duo/quad guide to the letter as far as I can tell and everything was great and working until I put it all in the case. The only things that have changed are connecting the front panel plugs for usb/firewire to the motherboard and connecting the case fans. I have tried unplugging the case fans with no change, I've tried removing the cmos battery and resetting the bios - then reconfiguraing everything - same result - all my settings take but the FSB setting.
Only guess I have - and it's a stretch is that the cmos battery is bad?
thoughts? ideas?
