Hello - I've been having a small but frustrating problem with Internet Explorer and it's my hope someone will be able to offer some assistance.

I'm trying to setup IE to automatically open certain types of files without prompting me. I click on a link to the file and it opens a "File Download" dialog box with "Open", "Save", "Cancel" and "More Info" buttons. I deselect the "Always ask before opening this type of file" checkbox, and click on "Open". The file opens properly - however if I click on that link again (or a link to another file with the same extension) I receive the same "File Download" dialog. This occurs with all file types, even after I restart my computer. There's no way to get it to remember that I want "open" to be the default action.

I've gone into "My Computer | Tools | Folder Options... | File Types", selected the file type which I want to automatically open, and clicked the "Advanced" button. The "Confirm open after download" box is deselected. I've also gone into the HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\(Filetype) key in the registry, and verified that the value of "EditFlags" includes "01" as the third octet.

My IE is version 6.0.2600.0000.xpclient.010817-1148, update version Q313675. If anyone can offer any suggestions for how to get this working, I'd really appreciate it. Thanks a lot!
