Problem after removing Vista RC1 partition

I recently removed my Vista RC1 partition (with Acronis) and resized my main partition to cover the space, but the Vista boot loader still comes up when I startup my system. Any way to fix this without formatting?

I'm pretty sure you needed to use a tool that comes with Vista, BCDEDIT, to remove the Vista bootloader from the boot sector of the hard disk and replace it with whatever other OS you want to start. Since you already removed Vista, maybe the best thing to do is use the XP recovery console and use FIXMBR and FIXBOOT to restore XPs boot loader. I'm making the assumption that's what you want to do, but if its some other OS then do whatever is appropriate to restore that system's boot sector.

I'm not familiar with the recovery console. (I know how to get to it, I've just never used it) Are these like commands in the command prompt or what?

Get VistaBootPro. It is free and should restore the Boot.ini file with no formatting or anything else. It runs under Vista or XP.

I used this to go back to XP from RC1 before I installed Vista Business RTM. The only thing I'm not sure about is that you already nuked the Vista partition. I don't know if the old Boot.ini still exists on your HD. Even if you can't use VistaBootPro right now, it is well worth having.

You don't know how to uninstall Vista

1. Boot your computer in to Windows XP.
2. Ensure you have the Vista DVD
3. Go to ?Start? and ?Run?. Type in ?e:\boot\bootsect.exe /nt52 ALL /force? (without quotes, and replacing e: with the drive letter of your Vista DVD).
4. Restart the computer, and you will notice the boot selection menu is gone.
5. Format the partition/drive where you had Vista installed.
6. Remove two files (Boot.BAK & Bootsect.BAK) on your XP drive?s root folder (C🙂, these were backup files of your previous bootloader, now no longer useful.
7. Optional: Restart to ensure it still works.
8. Use your partition software to merge your partitions together.
