Problem after bad defrag

I did a number on my PC last night! After running a defrag with no swap file, I forgot to turn off my fancy 3D screensaver. It fired and threw up a couple dozen errors which halted the defrag. I rebooted and got a message before windows loaded "cant find vmouse.vxd, system will restart" and sure enough the system shut down. I rebooted to safe mode and ran scandisk and finished the defrag. Booting to normal mode got me a RUNDLL32 GPF, no mouse, and a standard VGA driver (system and display props say Nvidia GeForce2 MX however)!

I deleted the ps/2 port which had an exclamation point about the missing vmouse.vxd and reinstalled it. Now my mouse works but I can only run 640x480x16 colors at 60Hz :disgust: . When I check advanced under display properties I have no adapter tab, just General and Color Management.

I reinstalled the Det 3 drivers from Nvidia (on top of the problem drivers) and I still cant get the display to work correctly. I'm probably missing something stupid and I really don't want to reinstall windows. Should I try to remove the vid card drivers completely from windows and then reinstall? Any help would be much appreciated! Thanks!

well try and un-installing the video card drivers and re-installing it may help..

if wosrt comes to worst you can install windows on top of itself and it saves all your settings etc you don't have to do a clean install from scratch :)

OK. I finally reinstalled the vid card the right way (deleted all traces of nv*.* in windows/system) and reinstalled the drivers. Life is good again :D, allthough I can't get the display properties in the system tray anymore without another error message (my wife can't live without that). Thanks again
