Problem accessing www.anandtech.com (and NO its not because the site is down!)

Hi,

Don't really know where to post this. I hope this is appropriate.

My friend cannot access www.anandtech.com for the first time on his machine. Whenever he types the URL we get the usual Internet Explorer 5.5 file download window saying 'You have chosen to download a file from this location. - / from anandtech[1]'. If we open the file its about 10K and is just a load of jibberish.

I can access the site perfectly from my machine. Both machines go through the same proxy server. It looks like a cookie problem so we cleared his temporary internet files and cookies but still get the same problem. He doesn't have problems accessing the forums or any other web sites?

I have a screenshot of the download box I can upload if required.

Any suggestions?

Yeah its either a browser issue or it's his isp. We use http compression here which is http 1.1, I'm assuming for some reason his isp maybe a proxy server isn't compatible. Not much we can do.

Its not his ISP as we are both using the same ISP/connection/proxy. I think his browser settings must be messed up.

I'll try copying the settings off my machine and duplicating them on his to see if that fixes it.

Thanks anyway! 🙂

We are on a corporate network so we cannot upgrade to IE6. We are both using IE5.5. I have checked and there is a settings to enable/disable HTTP1.1, I have asked him to ensure it is enabled.

He will get back to me later to let me know if it worked or not.

Sorry for wasting your time!

Edit : FYI, enabling HTTP1.1 under the advanced options in IE5.5 fixed the problem, he is now able to access the site! Many thanks!
