problem accessing computers on the network

Ok so my friend came over se we could transfer some stuff from my computer to his and I can't seem to get either my computer to access his or his computer to even see mine. Thing is is that I can see his computer on the network but it gives the standard you don't have permission to access to access this resource blah blah blah. I have sharing turned on and I can transfer stuff between my computer and my laptop on the network. On his computer I enabled file sharing and tried to access the workgroup and it says he doesn't have access and to contact the system admin. Since I could view him from my computer on the same network (yes we are both on mshome) and just tried sharing one of his hard drives so I could transfer. I restarted both computers trying to see if that would fix ti but still I can't access his computer and he can't access even the network. Running a search wouldn't bring up my computer on his. We are both running XP pro. Any ideas? I have like 40-50 gig i need to transfer so burning it to DVDs would take forever.
