I don't have a video or anything because it happened back in the 80's when I was a fireman... we had a MVA between an AMC Hornet and a tractor trailer. The wreck happened at about 3 AM when they always do. The Hornet driver pulled out from a side road in front of the TT who, according to the on board tele was going 62 MPH and weighing 88K. The Hornet was sucked up and completely wrapped around the left front axle . The impact was so hard that looking at the truck at first there was hardly any damage. We got out the Hurst and extraction tools and started cutting. An hour or so later we had cut him out and while he wasn't coherent he was definitely still alive because when we loaded him on the gurney he took a swing at me while I was strapping him in. When we got back to the fire hall we were still pretty jacked up and giving each other hi-5's and went to grab a beer to calm down when the squak came over that he died just as they got to the hospital. The last thing he did was take a swing at me. I hope when I'm going I do the same thing.

Geezus that was intense. Imagine being that cop, seeing it happen right in front of him. Wonder what happened to the truck driver.

Because that costs money and people don't want to pay for the borrowing we are doing now much less pay for more. Would you want to have your taxes raised?

Most will answer, "sure, for this" but at the same time, many would not. Just the way it is.

This apparently happened in Russia, you damn commie.

Goddamn.

Passing on roads covered in ice and slush is never a good idea. Looks like that person just got their two left tires into the slush and totally lost control. Driving in shit like that is the worst -- I avoid driving in that stuff at all cost. Too dangerous, and way too many bad drivers out there. I drive slow as shit and never pass in that stuff. Just flat out not worth it.

I wonder, why does it seem to be so popular in Russia to have a car cam? Is it expected to go out for a drive and witness a wreck or be in one, so one is ready with evidence for the insurance claim?

It's no more dangerous than driving in wet weather. You just have to take conditions into account and drive accordingly. the worst thing you can do is to hit the brakes when you start to slide, take your foot off the gas and you will recover. I saw this yesterday and if I remember right his mistake was to hit the brakes and stay on them. If he had not done that chances are he would still be among the living. He probably locked up the wheels and thus had no control.

o_O In the rain most cars are fine still driving 70-75 mph, depending on how hard it's raining. It's a pretty ridiculous thing to assert that driving on half slush covered roads is no more dangerous than driving in the rain.

my first thought about 5 seconds into the clip... snowy roads + head-on-traffic with highway speeds + no barriers = epic fail.

It says Russia. Anything like that here? Plenty probably.

In the vid description: "in suv was only driver he died immediately"

yeah if you pause it at 23 seconds, you can see it was driven right through from the side... no possible way anyone survives. What do you suppose was the last thing that went through his head there? The grille.

And to think I travel with my 2 kids in the rear ALL the time... just scary. I need to slow the fuck down in general.

EDIT> here's the slow motion version http://www.liveleak.com/view?i=d89_1330326199

just like you do when it's raining. And driving 70 - 75 mph in the rain I would not consider safe. I usually slow down when it rains.

^ it's definitely not safe although you feel you have perfect control. The issue is how you can correct in a situation... and at that speed in the wet, you're going to hit something before luck can take over.

Mostly for insurance, which is a pretty new concept for Russians (I think they got car insurance requirement just in the past 10 years or so). The insurance companies there are more demanding for proof of what happened, and most people do not get comprehensive coverage, so without solid evidence, a case where driver A claims one story while driver B claims a different story might not get settled. They also have scams when someone slams the breaks in front of you on purpose to receive insurance payments. Think someone even caught these scammers on camera and put it on youtube.

So driving in the snow is just as safe as driving in the rain?

2 things.

that suv did not have 4x4 or it wasnt on when it should have been

also, the guy cant drive. clearly darwinism. once his truck lost grip he gunned it with the gas. that decision killed him. all he had to do was keep off the gas and get behind that truck that he couldnt live to drive behind. literally.

look again, his running lights are on but not his brake lights. he was in full control and suddenly started swirving... you can see he was trying to pass that slower moving truck like the other car just did.

being a rear wheel drive car most likely, stomping on the gas does exactly that. but youre supposed to feel it breaking loose, youre supposed to let off the gas.

furthermore, he likely has anti lock brakes (i think?) so if he did, stomping on the brakes is the best thing to do. at least they say... i would just let off the gas and drive that thing like kyle bush until i can get it to the curb

Looks to me like a bad driver overall. He moves from the right lane into the left. Then drifts a little to far to the left after being safe in the lane for a few seconds. When he drifts over his left side tires hit some slush as he leaves the cleared tracks in the road. He overreacts and pulls hard to the right to get out of the slush. His overreaction takes him back into the other lane and makes him smack into the uHaul truck in the right hand lane. As he is hitting that truck, he overreacts even more by jerking a hard left on the wheel. This causes his SUV to spin a bit and drive straight into on coming traffic past the left hand lane.

Basically a bad driver that learned a lesson the hard way. One he or she will never repeat again.

yes if you take conditions into account and don't drive stupid. I've driven on glaze ice and I drove accordingly. The Ice storms in the DFW area are about the worst you can drive in. and I'd rather drive in snow.
