700mhz core 1.4ghz memory 8pp,4vs 128bit 128 or 256mb card.

The new product from S3 Graphics is interesting overall, yet it is not free from some drawbacks. If these are promptly corrected, the Chrome S27 may make a worthy opponent to GeForce 6600 GDDR2 and RADEON X1300 PRO. We don?t know yet the cost of the product. The PCB design of the Chrome S27 isn?t very simple, and the 1.4ns memory isn?t very cheap, and producing chips on Fujitsu?s facilities can hardly be cheaper than on TSMC?s. Considering the price cuts from ATI Technologies and the low price of GeForce 6600/6600 GDDR2, the S3 Chrome S27 only has any chance at all when it is going to sell in mass quantities at a price of less than $100. This will also depend on how well S3 Graphics collaborates with graphics card manufacturers.

Highs:

* High performance for its class
* The lowest power consumption level
* High GPU and memory clock rates
* Compact and simple PCB
* Chromotion 3.0 video engine
* Hardware image rotation support
* HDTV support

Lows:

* Compatibility problems with certain games
* Super-sampling instead of multi-sampling
* Doesn?t support FSAA in OpenGL applications
* Imperfect drivers

It actually sounds pretty interesting, and wouldn't be half bad at all if S3's driver team fixed most of the listed issues with the card.

There can never be to many players in the graphics card market. Lets hope S3 can correct the problems and release it at a competitive price point.

Very interesting.

The high clock speed coupled with very low power consumption & heat output is certainly good.

It is too bad that with AA + AF it somewhat falls outta the picture in performance terms, but overall, if pricing is good, it may just be a card for the low end market to consider :)

I've love to see them come up with something a bit more comparable to the higher end, or even mid-end cards, but still...this is at least a positive step.

At the height of competition there was 3dfx and nvidia with ATI and Matrox as semi-major bit players. Then Matrox dropped out.
Then 3dfx dropped out, and ATI didn't quite get their act together for a while and got stuck on the low end.
PowerVR came around for a very short time and cleaned up the low - mid end.
And since then it's been just ATI and nVidia, with ATI mostly only grabbing at high end and leaving the mid and low end to nvidia. (except during 2002-2003 with the R300 based stuff, then they dominated from low to high)

I could see adding a PCIe "chromotion" video rendering/output card if the price were cheap and the driver support was decent.

oh my.....if they had a decent driver team this card could certainly rock abit more, its pure speed is pretty impressive

trhe 6600gt is 128bit and it;s fine. this card needs much better drivers imho, with those speeds, it should be a lot faster than it is now. The drivers need a lot more time to mature.

the s3 card seems pretty good. it probably has a really small die size at 90nm and will be cheap. too bad we probably wont even see it here since s3 seems to sell all their cards in asia only.

the video card market is slowly changing anyway. before there was matrox, trident, cirrus logic (bought by intel) , sis, 3dfx (killed by nvidia through lawsuit in part), ati, etc. even western digital used to make video chipsets for a time (bet you didnt know that!)

anyhow, the reason there are 2 left, is development costs a crap load and there is no money at the low end. since now your choices are nvidia, ati, integrated video.

and integrated video is gaining a huge market share. since maybe 20% of computers are even used for gaming.

Integrated video has been owning half the graphics market for a long while.

Only two left? Not quite. Currently there are Intel, NVidia, ATi, VIA (S3), SiS (XGI), and Matrox making graphics solutions for PCs.

The problem is there are only two real gaming choice left.

Matrox hasn't done anything that has come close since the Parhelia.

S3 hasn't done anything since Savage 2000.

XGI and Intel have never done anything. You'd think with their resources and the size of the market Intel would.

I agree its sad to see the competition is only 2 companies which explains the $600.00 video card pricetag problem.

You kind of wish XGI, S3, and Matrox would see the light of day and say to themselves we need to merge otherwise we will be wiped off the face of the planet in a few years.

I am hoping S3 can enter the market in a big way, I have a S3 Virge (lol), S3 Savage3D, S3 Savage4 Pro, S3 Savage 2000 and a S3 Deltachrome. I didn't experience any driver problems with the Deltachrome and was surprised by it's excellent SM2.0 performance. Another video card to add to my S3 collection would be nice! ;)
