well our old trusty pany 27-inch CRT that has been with us for 10 years is going to bite the dust i think. today it was on and all of a sudden the picture was compressed into a single bright horizontal line across the middle of the screen. sound was normal... i turned the TV off and on a couple of times, and it worked normal again. i don't know when it'll finally give up on us =(

anyway, i started looking at some TV's and found some comparo sites. my family isn't fancy on watching HDTV stuff so HDTV is not necessary. something below 35-inch would do since anything larger would be difficult to watch from 5 feet away or so...

so, given a budget of about $1000, what would you buy? i've been seeing $999 refurb 42-inch HDTV plasma from philips (mixed review from FW) and this $929 hitachi 56-inch CRT HDTV from circuit city...

but i also kind of like a LCD: flat, light and doesn't eat a lot of electricity or make lots of heat.

so, what would you look into?

also, anyone knows what's exactly wrong with my TV?

Clearly an educated opinion... < sarcasm

I at first planned to get a DLP tv but I noticed they were not near as bright as an LCD tv (based on my perception, not the advertisements or reviews). Since my TV was going in a living room that lets in a lot of bright Florida sunlight, I opted for the LCD since it was much brighter and the viewing angles seemed better.

I love it. If I bought another HDTV, it would be LCD too. I don't care about 'accurate blacks' since dark movies just make me squint anyway.

i've just looked at some DLP HDTV's... most are huge TV's (the smallest one is a 42-inch samsung that costs $1400) so i think that's out... but, what exactly is the advantge of a DLP over an LCD (other than the obvious advantage of higher resolution)?

LCD, or DLP if you own your house and the TV will not need to be moved in the near future

OP - please don't listen to ATOT for TV advice. Most of them don't own a HDTV and follow religously what they read on the internet.

Each technology has it's advantages and disadvantages. If you want the best flat display out there then plasma is your only choice, but it comes at a price.

At 5 feet away you should be looking at a 40 inch TV. Any one of these technologies will offer a great TV at that size with the plasma being best (but it's out of your price range). Once your family gets a taste of HD, it WILL become a necessity.

Great buy until you mentioned the "4 year service plan." Extended warranties/service plans/exchange plans/etc are always a rip off. That salesman or company is laughing all the way ...

DLP in the living room, LCD for the bedroom. That's how I have it & I love it.
