Probably a stupid question, but I don't keep up with HT like I used to

So in the attic of my house I have what appears to be an older antenna (no clue how old) that looks like this. I was curious as to if a special antenna was needed to receive OTA HD channels.

No need for a new antenna. Most HDTV channels are in the UHF band which a normal antenna is more than capable of picking up. In fact, these will be much better typically than the new "HDTV" antennas.

Aiming the aerial will go a long way. You can find out where the DTV stations are in your area by going to here

Depending on the HDTV Tuner you use it will also give you signal strength indications, my dad has an outdoor antenna similiar to that one, works pretty good. His Tv does not have a HD Tuner so we are using the Dish Network box as the tuner.

No such thing as a stupid question 🙂

That antenna will work great for OTA HD - - - - the problem, however is its location, which can lead to multipath problems if it is your intent to actually hook it up in the attic.
