how do i save firefox favorites so if installing on a new machine i can restore my bookmarks?

Not sure in Firefox, but I'm using Opera in you go to File -> Import and Export -> Export Bookmarks. I would think Firefox has something similar.

Go to the bookmark menu, Organize Bookmarks, and there should be an option for backing up. At least this is for ff 3 beta 5

the export function just creates an html file that will essentially get me to all my links but can i then just import that on my new firefox install?

you should be able to select something to save your bookmarks under the Favorites tab. I've done this a few times and it works.

Wait, nevermind, I don't think you can catually restore them afterwards. It just saves a copy of the list.

Click on "Bookmarks" at the top then "Organize Bookmarks" and then click on "import and backup", specify where you want to save the file to.

It does exist, just not as a standalone button.

Bookmarks > Organize Bookmarks > File > Export (or Import > From file when you need it.)

I've always used MozBackup. Will backup Thunderbird too.

Backup the whole user directory(not program directory), and after you reinstall overwrite the new installation with your backup. That'll give you your exact setup you had before you reinstalled.

Also, if you reformat often or have multiple machines, FoxMarks is a godsend. All my favorites synced across all my machines, and it's just a matter of reinstalling FoxMarks when I reformat to get my bookmarks back.
