Probably a Dumb question: Tbird and Cooler

I just got a new Tbird, 1.33, and am planning to install a Thermoengine cooler. I notice there are 4 rubber pads on the cpu, which prevent the cooler from making contact.

I haven't installed the cooler yet, so perhaps the pressure of the clip will force contact, but I am unsure.

Any feedback would be appreciated.

Thanks

Keep the pads there. Their there to prevent the heatsink from crushing the core. Their squishy enough to be pushed down so that the cooler makes contact with the core.

The thermoengine won't contact those cpu pads

so wait, some coolers dont touch the core when the pads are there? im confused...

The rubber pads don't prevent the cooler from making contact. They prevent the cooler from crushing the cpu core when you apply the fifteen pounds or so of pressure to fasten the cooler to the socket.

While I haven't used the ThermoEngine (yet), I'm virtually certain that it does touch the core. If it didn't you'd get a fried bird.

I use a copper shim to make sure to get maximum contact between the core and the heatsink. I have looked at alot of copper shims online that cover all the cpu and not the core itself, I fail to understand the purpose of this. My FOP 38 has alot of clamping force and without the copper shim it looks like it may just barely touch the core, maybe just getting close enough for thermal grease to close the gap.

Ooops... I for got that the Thermoengine was the one with the circular center. Those pads won't do anything then.

anyone know the average temp for a tbird at 1.33ghz?

My 1ghz is running at 10x133 right now at 1.85v and it idles at about 53C, and under prime95 is 58C (as reported by my asus a7v133 and asus probe).

I'm using a fop-32 heatsink with the 80mm fan mod and the stock TIM.
