prob with my mobile 2500?

I just got a 2500+ mobile today in the mail. So i put it in my Abit NF7-S v2.0 and it booted fine. I started pushing it higher and higher. I have corsair pc2700 ram and got it up to a fsb of 215 before it started to crap out on me. So i lowered the fsb back down to 200 and then I thought I would lower the fsb a little and increase the multiplier of the cpu. Before I had it at a multiplier of 11. so i put it at a multiper of 13 and the fsb at 180 at a voltage of 2.0 Then it wouldn't boot so i reset the cmos and nothing. I even disconnected the battery and the mobo power and the power supply and waited for a couple of hours. Still nothing. That is why i am talking right now. I do not know what to do. I don't think the problem is the ram because i just put in my friend's stick of geil pc3500. I also tested the system with that memory and my old palamino athlon 2100+. Still nothing. I have a 9800xt, which I'm sure is not the problem.

If any of you have the NF7-S you know that there are 2 beeps at the beginning and that one is long and kind of a lower tone than the 2nd beep which is higher pitched and shorter. I do not get these 2 beeps at all.

I'm so mad right now. I had it running fine at like 2500mhz. AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH
 
You were pumping 2.0v to the 2500+ with air cooling? :Q

Isn't the default voltage on the 2500+ mobile something like 1.25v?
 
Any beeps? List off what parts you've tested and which you know work. That might help sort out the problem.

EDIT - And the default voltage is 1.45, misprint on newegg's part.
 
I don't get the usual beeps that the NF7-S v2.0 gives out. I get no beeps whatsoever, but the fans on it work and so do the led's. The hardware that i know works is my ram because i got it off a friend and the different processor i put into the mobo that I was using before the mobile. The 9800xt I'm pretty sure is working because that had nothing to do with what i was doing.

I have the thermaltake subzero 4g cooling the cpu and it kept the mobile 2500 at 1.9 volts at 36C. So i don't think it was a cooling issue.
 
I doubt the voltage killed it. Sounds like it may be a bios corruption issue. You could buy a new bios chip for it from excaliberpc. Or if you have a friend who has the same board you could borrow his bios chip to get yours working again.
 
Borrow a bios chip or buy one.
You could do some research first to make sure you have the exact symtoms of bios corruption on an NF7. Overclockers.com forums, AMDMB, nforcershq and extremesystems.org would be good places to search.
 
I think that the problem is the mobo or its bios because I have tested all the other components on my other mobo and they seem to work fine. So i will be ordering a bios saving kit or whatever off of excaliberpc.com and I will see where that takes me. If that doesn't work I will probably get a new mobo.


One side question. If the cpu is not installed can u still get to the bios or does it not display at all on the NF7-S v2.0?

No, you have to have a working processor in a board to be able to get into the bios.
 
he's probably not going to be the only one that fry's a mobile barton this week

someone on some other forums gave them the idea that these things like 1.9-2.1v for some reason

anything over about 1.74v is too much imo
almost any barton/t-bred b will oc to over 2.5ghz if you pump that much voltage through it, it just won't live long enough for anyone to believe that you did it 🙂

My border limit is 1.85V on air. I have watercooled case but there I don't use more than 1.85V either though I guess up to 2V would be OK. But whenever you use this type of voltage you have to expect the CPU may die.
 
well my mobile booted into the bios on my kr7a, so that's good.

Concerning where I got the idea to pump up the voltage is it even alright to refer to other forums in here because I know on some u cannot. let's just say that i got it from a certain amd motherboard forum. I don't think I'll go above 1.8 if i get it to work again.


O btw would this way work on my NF7-S on getting the bios fixxed?

The maximum safe vcore you can use is.... well, it depends on what forum you read. Lol. 🙂

I'm at 1.95V with watercooling. I used 1.9V on air for over a year. Some people are not willing to take a risk with their cpu's and that's certainly understandable.
 
I think anything about 1.85v is probably too high, despite the small gains you will get. I am currently using 1.75v and hit 2.3ghz so far. I'm taking it easy this time around... $98 is a good bit to lose to stupidity

Actually, 1.6v is the most you should give to a mobile Barton. We "old-time" overclockers believe that it's safe to overvolt any cpu up to 10%. That would be up to 1.8v for all other recent Athlon XP's, but only up to 1.6v for the mobile Bartons. You're safe at anything up to, and including, 10% over stock voltage. Some chips will handle alot more than that, but don't be surprised if your mobile chip only lasts a week or two at 1.9v!🙁
 
I wonder if there are any actual differences between a mobile barton and a desktop barton that would make the mobile more sensitive to voltage? As far as I know the mobiles have the same chips, but they have been tested to work at a lower voltage.

I don't think anyone really knows what the safe vcore limit is for a Tbred or Barton. I don't think any overvolting is guaranteed to be safe. What proof is there of a safe vcore limit? The only testing that we have access to is done by us. How many accounts have you read of a Tbred or Barton cpu dying of too much vcore? In the five overclocking forums I visit I have read of one user killing two cpus. That's not a lot to go on.

The voltage on the mobile Barton is only 1.45v if you are at the default cpu speed of 600mhz. The Powernow! specs say if the cpu speed is to increase, the voltages will increase with the multiplier according to the BIOS settings on the laptop MB. So, the mobile barton is identical to a non mobile barton.
All that is different is the L5 bridge and it is unlocked. Do some research.

Most any barton/XP proccessor can be made into a mobile part. I just turned my old 1800+ into one, so that can be modified on-the-fly from Windows as well
 
The Mobile Barton is the exact same thing as a desktop version it doesn't mean the only reason it runs at 1.45 compared too 1.65 is because of its ability to run that low not that it isn't designed for the very same voltages as a desktop. I have a feeling when they are testing cpus at the factory. THe Best of the Best chips are the 25watt and 35 watt, then come the 45watters which is what newegg has, then they go to desktop chips.

so as long as you keep the actual volts to the CPU under 1.85 and keep temps under 50 even under heavy load your fine. NF7 boards undervolt the CPU so running 1.9 in the bios is 1.85 aproxamatly
 
Software monitoring says my NF7 undervolts vcore. But measuring the mosfets with a DMM shows that it actually overvolts by .03V.
