i have a Phillips 1600 CD-RW, the 16x10x40 model. It is configured as a Master drive, with a Afreey 16x40 DVD as the slave, installed in WinXP. The DVD shows as F:\, the CDRW in question shows as D:\. The FDD is A:\ and the HDD is C:\.

I have several problems:

- It worked fine at first, but now doesn't like ANY CDs i put in it and wont write. its not a problem with the CDs
- MusicMatch Jukebox V.6 says in the CD-write dialog that i dont have a CD-RW drive (doh)
- WinXp doesnt see it AT ALL when configured as Slave

anybody got any ideas on why it doesn't work properly?

well i suppose i should tell you what other hardware ive got in there:

MSI 6373 nForce 420DPro mobo, with onboard video, sound and ethernet enabled.
BIOS version 2.0, soon i will flash it to 2.4 to attempt and correct a different problem. (see this post)
6-channel CNR audio card
256 Mb DDR RAM on 1 dimm in slot 1
AMD Athlon C 1330 Mhz 266FSB
Maxtor 20Gb ATA100 5400Rpm on IDE-1, master
ive put the DVD/CDRW details down already (DVD IDE-2, slave, CDRW IDE-2, master)

Windows XP
Roxio Easy CD Creator 5
Music Match Jukebox V.6

Have you tried reinstalling the software? I am also assuming you have done all your windows updates (including the one that fixes burning (not a critical, just a recommended).

You could always try installing an ASPI layer. Most burning software has there own, especially for XP. Maybe something trashed your ASPI layer.

Just a guess, it could also be a malfunctioning drive. (Just didn't want to mention that possibility...😀)

Try downloading Nero (will let you have limited use as a trial) and see if another burning software works (to verify that your burner is functional).

Thanks for you suggestions, btw what is an ASPI layer (i am one of the simple minded folk)

don't think its a bad drive, as i have sucessfully burned one cd with it but it could be an intermittent error

thankz neway

Here is a good place to get an ASPI update and read all about what ASPI is.

Adaptec - ASPI page.

Actually that page doesn't really explain what ASPI is so here is a basic definition.

ASPI
Advanced SCSI programming Interface. A standard SCSI software interface that acts as a liaison between host adapters and SCSI device drivers. ASPI enables host adapters and device drivers to share a single SCSI hardware interface.
