pro bono story

My father-in-law is a lawyer and occasionally (actually more often than most) takes on pro bono cases. (Pro Bono means doing work for free.)

The Story (many years old):
One day, a guy in a wheel chair came to his office and told him how he is disabled and lives off welfare and can't work. He has a home he lives in and he got married 3 years ago.

Well, his wife disappeared after about 3 months of marriage. Just left him I guess and he moved on with life. So, almost 3 years elapses and this lady re-appears and wants half the value of his home and alimony.

My father-in-law was pretty much in disbelief and couldn?t believe any lawyer would be stupid enough to take on this lady?s case. He views it as a slam dunk and takes the case.

Now remember, the guy is handicapped, can?t work and lives off of welfare. And remember I alluded to the fact that this guy moved on with his life essentially.

What happened you ask? Well, the lady didn?t get a thing. And, my father-in-law put in a counter suit. And she did manage to get stuck with paying him alimony!

She got exactly what she deserved!

I wouldn't mind having your father in law represent me in court. If I ever have to go.

Thanks for the comments ..

He is a well known divorce attorney in CT. And yes, I know ... I married his daughter.

I love counter suits to completely bogus suits. That story is perfect.
