Which has better gameplay and immersion?
Obvioulsy, graphicly Freelancer should whip Privateer 2 9 ways to Tuesday, so please dont use that as an aspect of comparison.
 
Haven't played either of the first two, and Descent was kinda so-so.

I would really recommend reading reviews at Avault.com. They always have in-depth coverage including the gameplay, replay, multiplayer, and other factors as applicable.

Also, FiringSquad.com has some great game reviews.
 
Freelancer would be the best. I consider that game the best single/multi-player space game that I've ever played.
 
privateer 1 was the best......privateer 2 was a huge graphics jump.....but i didn't think it was THAT good....freelancer's awesome.......but they REALLY SHOULD REMAKE PRIVATEER 1 w/ today's graphics!!! seriuosly!!
 
Freelancer. While Privateer 2 was OK (the FMV was HORRIBLY interlaced), it's just not as large and immersive as Freelancer.
