private file sharing network

I am looking to create a small (10-20 friends) file sharing network and can't seem to find much information on how to do this. The only applications I have found are large scale enterprise stuff. Anyone have any experience setting something like this up?

you could create a private Direct Connect hub (neo-modus.com)

make it password protected so not just anyone can join.. simple
